About

Take a step back in time and explore Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument that has been puzzling historians for thousands of years.

Uncover the theories surrounding the origins of the Stone Circle, including how each 13ft (3.96m), 25-ton (25,000kg) stone was transported and sculpted into the world-famous phenomenon that we know today.

What is Stonehenge and what is there to see?

View Stonehenge up close from the perimeter fence and marvel at one of the world's most famous landmarks, as you follow in the footsteps of prehistoric populations from 5,000 years ago.

Step into the visitors' centre to discover how builders worked to create the Stone Circle that has stood the test of time, in an exhibition featuring more than 250 objects. What tools did they use? How did they manage to carry the stones tens, and sometimes hundreds, of miles by land and water? How did they shape and raise them?

Try to work out whether Stonehenge was created as a place of sun worship, a sacred burial site or something completely different!

You can also explore recreations of Neolithic houses to catch a glimpse of what life was like at the time.

Where is Stonehenge?

Stonehenge is located nine miles (14.5km) north of Salisbury in Wiltshire.

How to get to Stonehenge

The travel to and from Stonehenge is not included in your ticket but there are several ways to get to the sight and if you want to rent a car it will take you approximately two hours to get from London to Stonehenge.

How to get to Stonehenge by public transport:

By train: There is a direct train from London Waterloo station to Salisbury station every hour, which takes around one hour and 20 minutes. From the station, you can then take a direct bus or taxi to Stonehenge.

By bus: From Salisbury rail station, there is a hop-on hop-off bus to Stonehenge, picking up from Salisbury city centre and Old Sarum.

By coach: Alternatively, visit Stonehenge as part of a day trip from London by coach with these Stonehenge tours or a coach operator.

What is included in my Stonehenge ticket?

Your Stonehenge ticket includes the timed entry to the ancient stone circle and access to the visitor centre as well as a 25% discount off Stonehenge guidebooks.

How much time do I need at Stonehenge?

We recommend that you spent at least one hour at the sight so you can explore the surrounding area at the monument and see different angles of the stone circle from the visitors walking path surrounding the circle. We would also advice to leave some time to explore the exhibit at the visitors centre in your own time.
