Lyceum Theatre
About
Lyceum Theatre is a historic theatre located in the heart of London’s West End.
The Grade II listed theatre has been used for performances for more than 200 years, and is now home to the much-loved Disney musical, The Lion King.
Built on one of the oldest sites in London, the Lyceum Theatre is one of the UK’s most prominent and important theatres.
The history of Lyceum Theatre
Lyceum Theatres' origins date back to 1765 and in its early years, the theatre hosted a variety of small musicals, circus acts, a chapel and even served as The English Opera House.
The Lyceum Theatre, as we now know it, was built in 1834 and continued to stage English operas and plays for many years. Following ten years of closure from 1939 due to proposed demolition, and another period of closure in the 1990’s, the theatre was fortunately rescued and reopened in 1951 as the Lyceum Ballroom, where famous bands including The Who, Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley performed.
The theatre was forced to close again in 1986 but was restored to theatrical use in 1996, including the addition of an orchestra pit. The critically-acclaimed The Lion King opened its doors in 1999 and continues to play at the venue to this day.
You can see Disney’s award-winning musical The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre in London. Since its opening more than 25 years ago, the show has been enjoyed by sell-out audiences from around the world, who are moved by the powerful storyline, incredible sets and iconic music.
