Top Hat at Southbank Centre
The sensational production of Irving Berlin’s Top Hat has been making waves this summer at Chichester Festival Theatre, preparing for a tour across the UK before taking residency for the festive season at London’s Southbank Centre.
Top Hat, hailed as one of the finest musical productions in West End history and famed for winning the 2013 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, is an adaptation of the 1935 film that starred Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Now, this timeless favourite returns to the stage in a sparkling new production for a limited run at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre
What to expect from Top Hat
Top Hat is pure old-school glamour, bursting with tap dancing and theatrical sparkle. This dazzling revival brings the 1935 RKO motion picture centre stage once more, whisking audiences back to Hollywood’s golden years.
A classic Hollywood romance on stage
Meet Broadway star Jerry Travers as he arrives in London to open a new show – only to find himself falling head over heels for fashion model Dale Tremont. Determined to win her heart, Jerry is ready to do whatever it takes… except Dale has mistaken him for another man, Horace Hardwick. What follows is a whirlwind of mix-ups and delightful comical situations paired with witty dialogues.
Stunning choreography and lavish costumes
The London Top Hat Musical production features dazzling choreography – a fitting tribute for a musical often branded as one of the greatest dance celebrations – under the direction of three times Tony award winning director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes). Expect sweeping ballroom numbers, high-energy tap routines and art deco splendour, whisking you from grand hotel lobbies to the romantic canals of Venice and beyond.
And nothing catches the spotlight quite like the costumes: sharply tailored suits, shimmering ball gowns and the signature top hats and tails, all bringing a burst of 1930s extravagance to the stage.
The London cast
Broadway star Phillip Attmore (Hello, Dolly!, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) steps into the shoes of Jerry Travers. He’s joined by Lucy St Louis, fresh from playing Glinda in Wicked the Musical, now dazzling as fashion model Dale Tremont. Lucy will share the role with Amara Okereke, known for standout performances in Les Misérables and My Fair Lady.
Clive Carter (Moulin Rouge!, Come From Away) takes on the role of Horace Hardwick, alongside Sally Ann Triplett (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, The Witches, Oklahoma!) as Madge Hardwick. James Clyde (Matilda The Musical, Macbeth) appears as Bates, while Alex Gibson-Giorgio (Sinatra the Musical, Zorro the Musical) brings flair to Alberto Beddini.
Irving Berlin’s timeless soundtrack
This joyous musical bursts with Irving Berlin’s greatest hits, brought to life on stage by Matthew White and Howard Jacques. Expect timeless numbers including Cheek to Cheek, Let’s Face the Music and Dance and the ever-stylish Puttin’ on the Ritz.
