History of the site

The site of the new Springfield Park has a rich and evolving history, rooted in healthcare and community service.

The land where the park now flourishes was once part of the Springfield University Hospital estate, a Victorian-era mental health hospital primarily offering psychiatric care, with large proportions of the grounds remaining derelict in recent years.

In 2012, a plan was approved to redevelop the 82-acre site into a vibrant new neighborhood known as Springfield Village. The vision was ambitious; to create a space that integrates world-class mental health facilities, affordable housing, and public green space, while also tackling the stigma around mental illness.

Springfield Park is the centrepiece of this regeneration – a 32-acre public park designed to promote wellbeing, diversity and community connection. The park sits alongside two new mental health facilities (opened in 2022 and 2023) and will eventually be surrounded by a residential community of more than 1,200 homes.
